What is pangasius?

The panga or pangasius is a freshwater fish grown mainly in Vietnam. Its shape is similar to a shark’s and is usually one meter long. The pangasius is not a meat that stands out for its nutritional properties. Its amount of protein and Omega-3 is relatively lower than other meats such as tuna and salmon.

The pangasius is also called an “iridescent shark” this is due to the dorsal fin that they have with young sharks. However, they do not have any close biological kinship with the giant sea predators.

In recent years, the industrial production of pangasius has increased considerably. Its low price and the global trend to include a tremendous amount of protein in the diet. They have made it one of the best-selling foods in recent years. Is it reasonable to eat pangasius?

A pangasius fillet’s protein is lower than in other fish. A salmon fillet provides 24 g of protein in one serving, a content relatively less than the 18 g of protein in pangasius.

In terms of fat, pangasius is high in saturated fat and relatively low in Omega-3 fatty acids. Including pangasius in the diet is not ideal in terms of nutrition.
